Mendez Lab is an undergraduate/graduate student laboratory at Texas A&M International University located in Laredo, Texas. Our research focus is to understand how bacterial populations impact plant establishment, thereby affecting plant productivity. Microbial diversity has been linked to plant diversity and ecosystem functions. However, the various physiological links between bacteria and plants have not yet been fully understood. We are interested in understanding how bacterial diversity or specific bacterial populations may alleviate the impact of environmental stressors on plant establishment and productivity. These impacts can be closely linked to soil health and overall environmental health. Our long-term interests are to understand how plant-microbe interactions can be manipulated for environmental remediation/ restoration and sustainability.
