Triclosan was introduced in 1972 as an active ingredient in surgical scrubs and has since been found in pharmaceuticals and personal care products such as antibacterial mouthwash, toothpaste, and detergents (Hinther et al. 2011). It is one of the seven most prevalent freshwater contaminants found in freshwater streams (Koplin et al. 2002). As a result, it is considered a contaminant of emerging concern.
